Sunniva from Sunniva Accessories
Who is behind the brand Sunniva?
Hi I am Sunniva ! I am 30 years old. I am originally from Norway, but I have been living in Mauritius with my Mauritian husband for the last 6 years. We also have a 14 months old boy.
I met my husband while I was studying Business in Australia. We went to the same university, but we actually met through Kitesurfing, which we both have a big passion for and that would be one of the reason why we decided to live by the sea.
Why did you choose to launch your own brand?
When I first arrived in Mauritius I was working in a real estate office. After one year I realized an office job was not for me and I decided to start my own little business making jewelry and accessories. I was encouraged to do so by a good friend who had just opened her first shop in Mauritius and she was willing to promote my first collection.
Where do you find inspiration?
I get a lot of inspiration online. I follow the trends in Europe and try my best to adapt it to the Mauritian market.
What is the design process of the gorgeous shell anklet we can find in this month’s box?
I have made each of the anklets in the boxes myself. The “anklet” can also be used as a bracelet :) and its 100 % waterproof - so no need to take it off when you go for a swim. The design process is very simple. And that’s the charm of the bracelet - it's basically a shell and some pastel beads and a tread.
What does “Made in Mauritius” mean to you? And how does Sunniva Accessories embody this definition of the “ Made in “?
It means a lot to me to have our products made locally. To give work to local people, to pick fabrics in the local shops. It feels like the right thing to do.
Living in the Mauritius Island well known for honeymoons and luxurious holidays, how would you define the Authentic Mauritius?
Very laidback and peaceful. Sometimes a bit to laid back as everything happens very slowly. I really enjoy it though and the island life fits my personality very well.
Your favourite Mauritius dish?
Hmmm… we got a lot of amazing food in mauritius. If I have to name one dish it will be fresh grilled fish with coconut chutney and a vegetable grateng.
How would you like to see Sunniva Accessories grow in 2018?
I am focusing on launching my website. The website is already online ( www.shopsunniva.com) but its not at all finished. It’s still a lot of work to do and it takes time. I hope that by offering online shopping and shipping most places in the world we can expand our markets.
Any places you would like to travel to? Why?
I really want to go to a small group of Islands called St Brandon. They belong to Mauritian and are situated in the Indian ocean approximately 450 km north of Mauritius. It’s extremely remote and the only way to get there is by boat. It’s only one house on the island and there are only a few fishermen living there. I would love to go there to kitesurf and explore the wildlife :)
